O'Mice an' Men

The best laid schemes o' mice an' men

Gang aft a-gley, [often go awry]

Robert Burns said that. It is the basis of the Steinbeck title, and has been going through my mind a lot lately. I make plans, they get screwed by forces beyond my control. I'm beginning to think that living by the seat of my pants will always be my way of life... and it sucks swamp water.

I had planned to spend the weekend with the BFF. We had a few sketchy plans, but mostly, we were just gonna hang, and maybe drink. Well, that got screwed all to hell, so hopefully it will be this next weekend. On the 2nd of November, we are heading to the Gulf, come hell or high water, and we need time to plan out where we want to go during those kid free, spouse free, responsibility free days. There will not be enough hours in that weekend for us to do EVERYTHING we want, so we have to narrow it down to the priorities... The beach is a given, since our hotel is right on said beach, we got that covered, even if it might be too cold for a swim. It's the rest we need to narrow down. There may be a trip over the state line just to say I have been to Florida, too. A light house the Punk visited on his holiday looks promising. There is also supposed to be a monster of an outlet mall we want to raid. In the past 20 years or so. My liking of malls and shopping dwindled down to nonexistent, but lately, I feel that pull to do things 'girly.' We'll see.

Anyway, my weekend was not what I wanted it to be. I did go to our church's Low Country Boil last night. Not as much fun as hangin' with the BFF, though.

I barely got out of my car, climbed onto the deck of the place where the water was being boiled, when one of my favorite folks hands me a beer. I can always count on that. H. is a sweet, cantankerous, and good fella. Cajun, former Air Force, retired corporate lawyer... and one of the best people I know. He and his wonderful wife have become very dear to me over the past few years.

Anyway, I ate like a pig, drank two beers, neither of a type I would buy myself. I am a Bud fan, but my favorite is 'Little Mickey's' which I can not find around here. I particularly like stout, much to wrinkled noses around here. I am always willing to try new beers, however.

I did get to know a few folks from church that I haven't really talked with before, and that was fun. What is really odd is that I have more fun chatting with the older ones than those my own age, or younger. Well, there is one, my kid's age, that I enjoy spending time with at church things, but she's an old soul, creative, smart, and had her share of hard knocks. Sweet kid that really deserves a break.

So, it was an interesting evening, even if I did end up going alone, and driving home to an empty house. The family was all working. I spend way too many evenings alone these days... I have to do something about that.
